A companion that wants to participate

Cavaliers are often affectionate, adaptable and socially engaged. Many enjoy walks and training as much as time on a lap. Their attachment to people means alone time should be introduced gradually rather than assumed, and a small body should not exclude them from enrichment or learning.

Activity and safety

Daily walks, sniffing and short reward-based sessions support physical and mental health. A spaniel heritage can produce interest in birds and movement, so secure areas and recall training matter. Their friendly reputation never removes the need for thoughtful introductions or supervision with children.

Coat and routine care

The silky coat needs brushing several times weekly, especially around ears, feathering and friction points. Ear, eye, dental and nail care should become familiar routines. Measure food and monitor body condition; small changes in weight are meaningful on a small frame.

Health questions are central

Mitral valve disease and syringomyelia are serious breed concerns, alongside eye, patella and hip conditions. Ask for documented screening, specialist heart evaluation and transparent family history. A pleasant temperament or show award is not a substitute for health evidence. Guardians should discuss appropriate cardiac monitoring and any signs of pain with their veterinarian.
