An active cat that changes the household

Bengals are often confident, curious and physically capable. Their striking coat should not be the main reason to choose one. Many need more interactive play, climbing space and problem solving than a typical adopter expects, and some communicate loudly when frustrated.

Build an environment, not just a toy box

Use stable vertical routes, multiple scratching options, hunting-style play and rotating food puzzles. Teach simple cues and stationing with rewards. Water play may interest some individuals, so bathrooms, aquariums and appliances need secure management. Outdoor access should be controlled through a secure enclosure or harness training where appropriate.

Relationships and routine

Gradual introductions are essential in multi-pet homes. High-energy play can overwhelm quieter cats, and access to separate resources prevents competition. Children need to understand that an interactive cat is not an object for chasing or restraint.

Health and responsible breeding

Ask about screening for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, progressive retinal atrophy and pyruvate kinase deficiency, along with family temperament. Laws concerning hybrid ancestry differ by location, so check local requirements. Responsible breeders prioritise stable domestic temperament over exotic appearance.
