Yorkshire Terriers were developed from working terriers and often retain alertness, persistence and confidence. They can learn quickly when training is clear and rewarding. Barking, chasing and guarding objects should be addressed early rather than excused because the dog is small.
Activity and household fit
Daily walks, scent exploration and short training sessions suit many Yorkies. Safe play matters because falls and collisions can injure a tiny dog. Children need close supervision and must allow the dog to retreat.

A long coat requires careful daily combing, bathing and drying. Many homes choose a shorter practical trim, which still needs regular maintenance. Pulling through tangles is painful; use appropriate technique or a professional groomer. Dental care is especially important.
