Built to climb and develop gradually
Norwegian Forest Cats are substantial, athletic cats that mature slowly. Many enjoy companionship while retaining an independent way of moving through the household. Their climbing ability makes sturdy vertical territory a core environmental need rather than an optional accessory.
Enrichment for a large cat
Use stable cat trees, wall routes installed into suitable structure, long scratching surfaces and interactive play that encourages natural stalking and climbing. Equipment must be rated for adult weight. Spacious carriers and litter trays improve daily practicality.
A genuinely seasonal coat
The double coat changes with the seasons. Weekly combing may be sufficient at quieter times, while shedding periods require more frequent attention. Focus on friction areas and teach grooming in short rewarded sessions. Indoor heating can affect coat cycles.
Health and responsible selection
Ask about heart screening, hip evaluation and testing for glycogen storage disease type IV where relevant. Large size is not a reason to encourage excess weight. Monitor body and muscle condition under the coat and maintain regular dental and veterinary care.
