Practical guidance for healthier, happier pets

PAWTIGO PRACTICAL TOOLS

Plan everyday care
with better numbers.

Estimate life stage, adult calorie needs, food portions, a sensible treat ceiling and a gradual food transition. Every tool explains its assumptions, limitations and next step.

CHOOSE A TOOL

Four focused calculators, one responsible method.

These tools are designed for healthy pets and planning conversations. They do not diagnose disease, set therapeutic diets or replace examination and body-condition assessment.

01 · LIFE STAGE

What life stage is my pet in?

Life stage is more useful than a simplistic “human years” number. It helps frame preventive care, nutrition, behaviour and the questions to raise at a wellness visit.

  • Uses AAHA canine and feline life-stage frameworks.
  • Accounts for expected lifespan in adult dogs.
  • Does not attempt to diagnose age-related disease.

02 · FOOD & CALORIES

A transparent daily feeding estimate.

This calculator starts with resting energy requirement and applies a conservative adult maintenance factor. Add the caloric density from your food label to convert calories into grams.

03 · TREATS & EXTRAS

Keep extras from displacing complete nutrition.

A commonly used planning ceiling is to keep treats and other extras within 10% of total daily calories. This tool converts that ceiling into an approximate number of treats.

  • Includes chews, toppers and table food.
  • Rounds down to avoid exceeding the ceiling.
  • Does not endorse a particular treat or ingredient.

04 · FOOD TRANSITION

Build a gradual change you can follow.

A sudden diet change can be difficult for some pets. Generate a simple schedule, measure both foods by calories where possible and slow down if digestive signs appear.

  • Choose 7, 10 or 14 days.
  • Shows old-food and new-food percentages.
  • Urgent or persistent symptoms need veterinary advice.

READ THE RESULT RESPONSIBLY

A starting estimate is not a feeding prescription.

01

Check the individual

Body condition, muscle condition, health, age, neuter status and daily activity can all change energy needs.

02

Use the actual label

Products vary greatly in calorie density. Use kcal/kg from the current package, not a generic cup or scoop.

03

Measure and monitor

A gram scale is more precise than volume measures. Track weight and body condition consistently.

04

Escalate when needed

Puppies, kittens, pregnant pets, seniors and pets with medical conditions need individualized veterinary advice.

CALCULATOR FAQ

What these results can and cannot tell you.

Why can the package feeding guide differ?

Package guides cover a broad population and may use a different calorie model. Start with one defensible estimate, then adjust using measured weight, body condition, muscle condition and professional advice.

Should I use current or ideal weight?

For ordinary maintenance in a healthy adult, current weight is a starting input. Do not design a weight-loss or weight-gain plan from this page; ask a veterinarian to establish an appropriate target and diet.

Can I use the calorie calculator for puppies or kittens?

No. Growth needs vary by age and expected adult size and require a complete growth diet with closer monitoring. The food calculator on this page is intentionally limited to adults.

Do wet and dry foods use the same measurement?

Use the energy density printed on each specific package. If the label lists kcal per can, tray or cup instead of kcal/kg, ask the manufacturer or veterinary team for the correct conversion.

When should I stop using a calculator?

Seek professional advice for unexplained weight change, appetite loss, persistent digestive signs, pregnancy, lactation, growth, frailty, chronic disease or a prescribed therapeutic diet.

METHODOLOGY & SOURCES

Built to show its work.

The life-stage framework follows AAHA guidance. Energy estimates use the AAHA RER formula and adult maintenance-factor ranges. WSAVA recommends individualized nutritional assessment rather than relying on a calculator alone.
